How to Use Blotting Paper Without Ruining Makeup

The difference between makeup-safe and makeup-destroying comes down to one simple technique.

You've probably seen it happen: someone at a party pulls out blotting paper, dabs their face, and their foundation comes off in patches. That shouldn't happen—and it doesn't, if you use blotting paper correctly.

The secret? It's not the paper—it's the technique.

The Golden Rule: Press, Don't Rub

This cannot be emphasized enough. Rubbing creates friction, and friction is what destroys makeup. Pressing allows the blotting paper to absorb oil through capillary action—without disturbing the layers beneath.

Think of it like a sponge, not a washcloth. You press a sponge to absorb a spill—you don't scrub with it.

Step-by-Step: The Correct Technique

1

Remove One Sheet

Peel off a single sheet from your PleasingCare blotting paper pack. Our sheets separate easily—grip the edge and pull gently.

2

Fold (Optional)

Fold the sheet in half, creating a smaller surface area. This gives you better control and a fresh side to use if needed.

3

Position on Oily Areas

Place the sheet flat against your T-zone (forehead, nose, chin). These areas produce the most oil. The sheet should cover the area completely.

4

Press and Hold (2-3 Seconds)

Press gently but firmly. Hold still for 2-3 seconds. Don't move the sheet around. Hold pressure, don't friction.

5

Lift Away

Peel the sheet off by lifting straight up (not peeling at an angle). You'll see the absorbed oil on the paper. Discard and use a fresh sheet if needed.

What to Avoid

❌ Never Do This

  • • Rub or drag across skin
  • • Press and move simultaneously
  • • Use the same sheet on multiple areas
  • • Scrub back and forth
  • • Peel off at an angle (risks lifting makeup)

✓ Always Do This

  • • Press flat, hold 2-3 seconds
  • • Lift straight up when done
  • • Use fresh sheet for each touch-up
  • • Target T-zone specifically
  • • Wait 30 seconds after applying makeup before blotting

Special Scenarios

With Powder Foundation

Blotting paper works exceptionally well with powder foundation. The powder absorbs some oil naturally, and the paper removes excess without disturbing the powder layer. Expect your makeup to stay intact for hours longer than without blotting.

With Liquid Foundation

Liquid foundation is more vulnerable to disruption. The key is timing: wait at least 30 seconds after application to allow the foundation to set. If your foundation is still tacky, wait a bit longer. Press gently and lift quickly.

With Heavy Makeup/Stage Makeup

Professional makeup artists blot between setting spray applications. The technique remains the same—press, don't rub. With stage makeup, you may need more sheets as there's more product to work through.

Common Mistakes

Mistake #1: Using Too Much Product at Once

If you're pressing and nothing seems to be happening, it's likely because you're pressing too hard or too long in one spot. Multiple gentle presses work better than one aggressive press.

Mistake #2: Blotting Too Soon

Blotting immediately after makeup application can disturb products that haven't set. Give your makeup at least 30-60 seconds to settle before your first blot.

Mistake #3: Ignoring Sheet Saturation

A saturated sheet loses effectiveness. If you still have oily skin after one press, grab a fresh sheet. Using a depleted sheet just moves oil around rather than absorbing it.

The 30-Second Test

Not sure if you're doing it right? Try this test: after your next application of makeup, wait 30 seconds. Then follow the steps above. If your makeup remains exactly where you applied it—you've mastered the technique.
